Description: Sholem Aleichem (1859–1916) is considered one of the most prominent Yiddish writers of all time. He wished for Yiddish literature to become the national literature of Jews – seen as equal to that created in Hebrew. His novel Tevye the Dairyman was adapted into the famous musical Fiddler on the Roof. The writer also founded the literary journal Di Yiddishe Folksbibliotek, which proved crucial to the emergence and development of modern Yiddish literature.
We invite you to explore Aleichem’s fascinating life: the story of his love, trajectory of his writing career, and his lot as an émigré.
