Type: Elaboration
Author: Dagmara Budzioch
Description: This lesson is devoted to the Books of Esther forming part of the JHI Museum, dating back to the 17th and the 18th century. It presents the decorative techniques used on the megillot (Hebrew: "scrolls") and intriguing traditions of the scribes. A large portion of the lesson focuses on the illustrations, often forming narrative cycles and most frequently featuring the motif of the hanging of Haman. You will also discover what can be learned from the illustrations and ornamental elements – how they can help us determine tha date of a scroll's creation and what they tell us about the erstwhile culture, art, and even fashion.
