Title: Biographies of Selected Oneg Shabbat Members
Type: Showing
Author: Zuzanna Benesz-Goldfinger
Description: The underground research group working under the cryptonym of Oneg Shabbat – “the joy of Saturday” in Hebrew – would not have existed had it not been for each of its co-creators. The method adopted by Dr. Emanuel Ringelblum was based on cooperating with the representatives of various social circles. Not only did Oneg Shabbat members perform various functions in the group, they also represented disparate linguistic backgrounds and worldviews.
Most members of Oneg Shabbat were bi- or even trilingual. They wrote in the language they felt most comfortable in or in the one they preferred due to their education, ideals, or political affiliation.
The group united radical leftists with right-leaning individuals and liberals. Despite their differences, they formed a tight-knit community. The fruit of their efforts was the Archive, which to this day constitutes the main source for the research of Polish Jews under the German occupation. The collection was created by a team of several dozen people. This lessons allows you to take a closer look at the biographies of six of them.
